A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
